Al Nicholls, tenor sax player and arranger for the band first formed Blue Harlem after serving his time with the Big Town Playboys, King Pleasure and the Ray Gelato Giants, and since the year 2000 he has established Blue Harlem as one of the premier Swing and Jive bands on the London circuit. Their love of the music of the golden swing era, and the jump blues of the 40s & 50s means that stylistically they are all hip to the same muse.
The bands live shows are now an exciting mix of original takes on swing standards, alongside hard driving, emotionally charged, sophisticated blues (both covers and original compositions). All three saxes, along with the two trumpets and trombone contribute swinging solos, whilst the superb rhythm section always guarantees a packed dance floor.
Blue Harlem have been invited to perform regularly at Festivals and private parties Worldwide, including charity balls at Highgrove House for The Prince's Trust and more recently as one of the main highlights at the 'Cornbury Music Festival' in Oxfordhire, as well as proving to be a huge hit at the first 'Tower of London Music Festival' last July. They are regulars at London's World-famous '100 club' as well as at 'Live on the Park at Pizza on the Park'.
Since Blue Harlem launched their new album 'Talk to Me' in September 2005, they have been greatly received throughout the media.
Interviews and tracks from the new album have been featured on Michael Parkinson's 'Sunday Supplement show', 'The Paul Jones Show' (both on BBC Radio 2), on Smooth FM by Sarah Ward and Campbell Burnap, as well as LBC Radio's Sandi Toksvig programme live in the studio.
Blue Harlem are a truly unique band and will guarantee to keep your feet tapping, your heart jumping, but most of all will leave you crying out for more!
