Clare Teal - "The Divas and Me”
Our very own Queen of Swing celebrates the music of her heroines, the leading lights of the jazz and big band world Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Judy Garland, Doris Day and many of their illustrious contemporaries.
The multi award winning singer and BBC Radio 2 broadcaster demonstrates also the influence these characters have had on her own acclaimed catalogue of work. Known for her knowledge and love of the Great American Songbook and more recently The Great British Songbook. With wit and warmth Clare tells outrageous anecdotes of their extraordinary lives and points to the future of Diva-dom with a few relevant originals and more modern day covers.
From presenting her BBC Radio 2 shows, to supporting Liza Minnelli, to performing at the BBC Proms, Clare Teal can do it all – which is how her concerts can cover such a huge spectrum of sounds and genres so wonderfully.
And although rooted in the jazz traditions of the 1930’s and 40’s, the main focus is on Clare’s interpretations and delivery of some of the greatest songs British songs of the last 100 years.
From Ivor Novello and Noel Coward to Annie Lennox and Snow Patrol, the show wends its way through 100 years of pure class.
The two songs that started the whole project were Try A Little Tenderness and A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square “I had always assumed these to be American songs and was fascinated to learn that both were written by Americans and Brits working together”. Add to the mix an uplifting New Orleans take on Ray Noble’s Love Is The Sweetest Thing , a blistering samba arrangement of Moloko’s Sing It Back with Latin percussion. It is to Clare’s credit that all these songs from such wide-ranging eras sit alongside each other so comfortably.
The evening promises to be as varied as it is entertaining, with Clare’s inimitable humour and banter mixed perfectly with uplifting ballads and up-tempo classics, old and new.

Yorkshire born Clare Teal is one of the most successful female British jazz singers in decades with a string of albums behind her, including the UK National Top 20 hit and award winning album "Don't Talk".
After signing to Sony in 2004, this was to be Clare’s breakthrough album and it is an exquisite record of tender jazz that perfectly exemplifies just what a talent she is.
Critical acclaim poured in from the national broadsheets and magazines for Clare, who then went on to write and record her fifth studio album ‘Paradisi Carousel’ which saw her music move towards a more mainstream pop style.
However in 2008, Clare embraced a return to her first love - jazz with the release of 'Get Happy’ on the Universal imprint W14 Music.
She has also appeared at the Royal Albert Hall during the Proms, appearing with the John Wilson Orchestra and singing, amongst others, "Secret Love" to great acclaim.
Clare also won British Jazz Singer Of The Year in both 2005 and 2007, and BBC Jazz Singer Of The Year 2006.
Having spent early 2012 on a UK wide tour with her "Feeling Good" show, producing and presenting her weekly shows for BBC Radio 2 (BBC Big Band Special on Monday evenings and Clare Teal on Sundays, both on Radio 2), writing her regular Yorkshire Post newspaper column, promoting her latest album, 'Hey Ho', a celebration of The Great British Songbook, spanning a period of almost 120 years from Yeats to Snow Patrol and including two of her own compositions, a Christmas tour, and taking part in, and presenting along with Olly Murs, the BBC Leeds Build a Big Band formed for Children in Need, it proved to be the busiest year yet for Clare.
2013 is proving to be no different with UK dates galore, festival appearances, return visits to many favourites, as well as visiting some new venues, and a healthy smattering of other surprises in between.
