The tenth ArtERY Live season kicks off with a visit to East Yorkshire by Radio 4 performance poet, Luke Wright. Luke, who is a regular contributor to the Sony Award-winning BBC programme Saturday Live will be bringing his new show Essex Lion to Swanland Village Hall on Sunday 13th October 2013.
Essex Lion invites the audience to step into Luke’s bizarre world of romping satirical verse. Ever seen a lion? In the wild? In England? Last year in Clacton some campers thought they did. They didn't of course, lions aren't native to north east Essex. But their not-sighting triggered something in the brain of Luke Wright. Now he too is seeing the things others don't. Essex Lion captures the glamourless pulse of mainstream Britain and transforms it into rhythmic, transcendental beauty.
ArtERY Live Manager, Ellen Thorpe says “We jumped at the chance to book Luke Wright for ArtERY Live and we’re confident our audiences will enjoy Essex Lion with its everyday tales in vivacious rhyming verse sizzling with spot-on social observation.”
4Talent award-winner Luke Wright, who has been described as “poetry’s answer to Russell Brand” might just be the hardest working man in poetry. He’s a prolific producer of new work, the curator of one the country’s largest poetry events and a regular on radio and TV. He has seven solo poetry stage shows, all of which played to sold out audiences at The Edinburgh Fringe, got five star reviews and have completed extensive national tours.Luke’s debut poetry collection is Mondeo Man. He was shortlisted for an Eric Gregory Award in 2011. He also writes poetry for films. In 2009 he took contemporary poetry onto primetime TV, writing all the poetry for Channel 4’s The Seven Ages of Love, a 30 minute documentary that was broadcast to over a million people and later nominated for a prestigious Grierson Award.
Target audience: 14+ - appeals to all ages. For people who like poetry, cerebral comedy, story-telling and also those who thought they hated poetry!
