Singer songwriter Holly Jazz Lowe is the driving force behind London-based band Like a Thief, whose first few singles have been causing quite a stir in the record industry. She recently moved back to her native Scarborough, and has just relocated to Manchester.
She is now also playing solo shows using just voice and piano which feature the songs she writes for her band, among some classy covers.
Signed to Mercury Records at the age of just 17, Holly quickly learnt about the highs and lows of the music. She spent many nights working in piano bars in London - from the Ritz to some of the sleaziest bars and clubs that the Mayfair scene has to offer. Still in her mid-twenties, she has emerged as a very experienced and world-wise artist ready to make her mark.
She recently kicked off the 2008 Beverley Folk Festival supporting Buzzcocks - earning her many new admirers. Her highly original songs are a pleasing mixture of jaunty rock/pop, soulful ballads and reflections of personal experiences. Processed Pea organiser Martin Peirson explained “I was advised to check Holly out - and was really impressed with her live performances. I think she is very special and has that mystery ingredient that could bring her massive success”.
Her new single 'The Hours we Kept' was inspired by a local experience. Holly explained: “I was driving up to Scarborough from London. It was night time - I often drive at night because the roads are empty. I go over the Wolds which is high ground, winding small roads, spooky road-side hedges and fields of nothing that go on forever. There’s this place right at the top of this really steep hill, where you can see Scarborough off in the distance. It was 3am at the top of this hill and I stopped the car but left the tape of John Lennon’s imagine album playing super-loud, and climbed onto the bonnet of my car. I laid there looking up at the sky which was packed to its limits with stars. It was just amazing and I was in it alone.”
With or without a band - Holly has a confident stage manner and some excellent songs. Her internet presence is bringing her much attention which prompted her to put her own spliced live medley of songs onto You Tube as a taster of her live solo show
Holly’s recordings can also be heard on her Myspace site here
