Market Weighton Walkers Festival 2008
Market Weighton is the first town in East Yorkshire to receive accreditation under the national "Walkers are Welcome" scheme.
The Working Party is holding a walking festival over the weekend of 18th/19th of October and individuals and groups from neighbouring villages and towns will be encouraged to attend.
In addition to walking a choice of musical entertainment will be provided at venues in the town. For those undertaking the longer walks the Market Weighton Community bus "Winnie" can be booked to drop walkers off at starting points away from the town.
On the Sunday of the festival weekend there will be a treasure hunt to encourage younger walkers. Details of the event event and other walking related activities in and around Market Weighton can be viewed on our newly launched web site here:
Walkers Are Welcome - Market Weighton
Because of Market Weighton's position at the edge of the Wolds, it is within easy reach of the many public footpaths and rights of way to be found in the East Riding of Yorkshire. These include two long distance footpaths, the Yorkshire Wolds Way and the Minster Way, and the shorter Hudson Way. The National Cycle Network - Route 66 also passes through the town.
The Programme of Walks and Entertainment is as follows:
Saturday 18th October
10.00 am - Launch at the Half Moon Inn (High St) coffee & information stands
11.00 am - Town Trail with the Market Weighton Civic Society
11.00 am - Bunny Hill & Hotham Carr - Approx 7 miles - Please bring a packed lunch - FREE transport provided
2.00 pm - Rail Trail - approx 2 - 3 hours, about 4 miles - the history of the former railway line
2.30 - 7.00 pm Sing-a-round at The Red Lion - all ages and abilities welcome - Sing a song, play a tune, recite, join in or just listen - admission FREE Session host: Mick McGarry of Punch The Horse
Sunday 19th October
10.00 am - Tea and coffee - Half Moon Inn
10.15 am - Warter Walk - Meet Half Moon - 7 mile circuit - Please bring a packed lunch - FREE transport provided
11.00 am - Pocklington & Millington circular walk - Meet Half Moon - Approx 6 mile circuit - Please bring a packed lunch - FREE transport provided
1.00 pm - Londesborough to Market Weighton - Approx 4 miles - Please bring a packed lunch - FREE transport provided
From 3.00 pm Hot sandwiches will be provided at The Half Moon Inn for all walkers. There is NO CHARGE to participate in these activities. Come along and enjoy our fantastic scenery. All walks are guided and include local history and information. A badge and certificate will be given to all walkers completing a walk.
