Whitby Musicport Festival 2007

Now in it’s eighth year Musicport World Music Festival announces its full line-up for the weekend which this year includes:
Rachid Taha Algerian star whose recent appearance at Glastonbury (as part of Damon Albarn’s Africa Express) was definitive highpoint of the festival for many where he was joined onstage by an all-star cast (including Fatboy Slim, Billy Bragg, Baaba Maal, Amadou and Mariam & the Magic Numbers) for his furious version of the Clash classic Rock El Casbah.
Courtney Pine The leading light of UK jazz brings his excellent band up north for what will be a sensational finale to this year’s festival. Varttinna the 11 piece band from Finland fresh from providing much of the musical score for the £25m stage production of Lord of the Rings bring the wonderful traditional music of the Karelia region which is both mystical yet surprisingly danceable.
Other artists also confirmed include Linton Kwesi Johnson the world’s first dub poet & one of Britain’s most influential & unique voices in a rare spoken word performance.
Sidi Goma The Black Sufis of Gujerat . Devotional music from India performed by musicians from a hidden minority with their roots in East Africa,Kékélé Veteran Congolese band from the golden age of Rumba Congolaise . Subtle rhythms dazzling guitars & enchanting vocals. Galina Dumushliyska exclusive UK performance from Bulgarian singer who is a major star in her homeland. Nuru Kane & The Bayefal Gnawa. Paris based young star of Sengalese music Susheela Raman. World Music Award winner & Mercury prize nominee with her beautiful music exploring her Tamilnadu heritage Lau and dozen more being confirmed week to week.
Other acts include Forty Thieves Orkestar, Muntu Valdo (Cameroon) Eduardo Niebla Experience, The Bollywood Brass Band, Adel Salameh Trio (Palestine) & Rory McLeod.
